How it all began...
In the years from 1995 to 1998 we accompanied and organized several aid transports to Romania – to the children’s home “Leaganul pt. Copii” in Timişoara and to a nursing home in Lipova.
Very soon we came to realize that by this one can at best provide “first aid” / emergency aid, but in no case cause sustainable changes and that the target group – the children, the elderly – often don’t receive what they really need. Therefore, after a visit to a “Casa de copii tip famililal” in Lipova in 1999, the plan was to start a similar project – instead of “only” aid transports.
We knew that in a local house in the village with a garden and animals (dogs, cats, pigs, chickens …), with foster parents and a normal visit to the village kindergarten / elementary school, one can simulate a nearly “normal” family life for 8-10 children and enable personal, individualized upbringing and education by foster parents, enabling them to grow into integrated, self-confident adolescents.
Initially, the foster parents would be supported by a cook and cleaning aid so as not to overwhelm the parents.
They would be supported by a psychologist and a social worker, who were employed and paid by the association part-time. The children would receive individual support for school problems from elementary school to university. In addition, they should not grow up separated from the rest of the village community, but have freedom for contacts and friendships outside the houses.
1999 - Foundation of the Charity Association
In 1999, the German association Siguranta pentru Copii and the Romanian foundation “Siguranta pentru Copii in Romania” were founded thus starting the project “Casa de Copii”.
Activities in Romania include annual mountain or Black Sea holiday trips, day trips and multi-day camps. In Checea, there were creative weeks with art students from the Timişoara Art Academy followed by exhibitions in Timişoara, sports programs, music lessons, dance, karate, football, language courses …
We have always put great effort into offering the kids as much as possible, on the one hand to give them all the joy we could after their early traumatization, and on the other to broaden their horizons and opportunities to discover personal strengths.
As co-founder and first Chairwoman, Marianne Herbold – together with her husband Dr. Med. Hans Ludwig Herbold – brought the Siguranta pentru Copii – Geborgenheit für Kinder e.V. to life in 1999. Over the years – and this is no different today – they have taken personal care of their protégés in Romania with relentless commitment on location and in Germany, to provide them secureness, happiness and individual support.
She also did not shy away from a 17-day odyssey together with Deputy Chairman Helmut Wollbeck at the wheel of a tractor with a grain trailer when time had come to somehow transport that sponsored beast to Romania.
